Unlike in the past when cosmetic procedures were by and large sought after by women, men have also started utilizing their possibilities now. The number of middle-aged and older men opting for cosmetic surgery has risen three-fold in the past 15 years. This trend is an offshoot of men desiring a more youthful appearance and trying to delay the telltale signs of aging.
Changing Trends and Statistics
Michael C. Edwards, president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery says, "Women still comprise about 90 percent of the cosmetic surgery patients, but the number of men undergoing the knife is increasing at a faster rate as times have changed". The top cosmetic procedures for men in the country in 2013 include liposuction, eyelid surgery, and male breast reduction.
The number of cosmetic procedures for men has increased by more than 106% between 1997 and 2012 according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).
The data available from the Indian scenario is also interesting as it points out that men seeking cosmetic procedures have increased by almost 100% between 1997 and 2013. Body contouring procedures such as male breast surgery, and hair restoration were the most popular. The thought that only women seek fine definition is a misconception as men have a range of demands at present from getting a firm jaw line to carving a six pack and more. According to research, men undergo cosmetic procedures mainly to look better and to succeed in their professional life.
The case is no different in Arab countries. According to arabnews, men make up 40 percent of the customers of cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures. The highest rate of cosmetic surgery was recorded in Riyadh (70 percent), followed by Jeddah (25 percent) and the Eastern Province (5 percent). A recent survey conducted in Riyadh shows that men in the age group of 20 to 40 made up 40 percent of the customers.
Men are choosing invasive, minimally invasive and non-invasive procedures to meet their varying cosmetic demands. The advancements in various body contouring techniques and choice of procedures are expected to increase the popularity of male cosmetic procedures even more.
